Water Mist System
Water mist is a system that uses very small water droplets to extinguish or control fires. The fire suppression capability of water mist is based on evaporation. A great amount of energy is absorbed from the fire when tiny water mist droplets turn into vapor. This makes water mist an excellent choice to get protection from fire. Water mist fights fire in three ways. Each of these methods affects the three elements in the “fire triangle”, which consists of oxygen, fuel, and heat.
Why Is the Water Mist System Effective
In the UAE, Middle East, Asia, and around the world, water mist systems are very effective in extinguishing fires. The reason behind this is that they provide thermodynamic cooling through evaporation and oxygen reduction through steam displacement. However, like traditional sprinkler systems, these are designed to an applicable standard and within the correct environment.
The design of each water mist system is unique to the manufacturer. Before being specified and installed, each water mist system should be tested to recognized and established international test protocols for conformity.
Water Mist System Types
There are different types of water mist systems, which are the same categories as the different types of sprinkler systems. Here we share them:
Deluge System
A water mist system utilizing non-automatic mist nozzles attached to a piping network connected to the fluid supply directly. It can also be attached through a valve controlled by an independent detection system installed in the same area as the mist nozzles.
Wet Pipe System
This water mist system uses automatic nozzles attached to a piping system containing water and connected to a water supply. As a result, water discharges immediately from nozzles operated by the heat from a fire.
Pre-action Systems
This type of water mist system uses automatic nozzles attached to a piping system that contains air that might or might not be under pressure. It is installed in the same areas as the mist nozzles with a supplemental detection system. When the detection system is triggered, a valve opens to permit water to enter the piping network, which is then released through all active nozzles in the system.
Dry Pipe Systems
Dry pipe water mist system using automatic nozzles attached to a piping system containing air, nitrogen, or inert gas under pressure. The release of these gases allows the water pressure to open a dry pipe valve. Because of this, the water then flows into the piping system and out through any open nozzles.
