What Are Navigation Lights For Boats?

Navigation lights are lights installed on vessels to indicate the size and type of the boat as well as the direction of travel. They help other mariners identify the position and movement of the boat at night or in poor visibility conditions. Displaying the proper navigation lights is a legal requirement under the International Regulations for Preventing Collisions at Sea. This shows that they are properly maintained and visible at all times after sunset or during restricted visibility.

Types of Marine Navigation Lights

Masthead Light

A masthead light is a white navigation light mounted on the vessel’s centerline, running fore to aft. It casts an unbroken beam across 225 degrees of the horizon, shining from straight ahead to 22.5 degrees beyond the beam on both the port and starboard sides.

Stern Light

A stern light is a white navigation light installed near the rear of the vessel. It provides continuous illumination over a 135-degree arc along the horizon, projecting light 67.5 degrees to either side from the vessel’s stern.

Towing Light

According to Rule 21(d), a towing light is defined as a yellow light that matches the same specifications and visibility characteristics as the stern light described in Rule 21(c). It should be mounted as near to the stern as practicable and display an unbroken beam across a 135-degree arc on the horizon, extending 67.5 degrees from the vessel’s aft centerline on both port and starboard sides.

Starboard Light

The starboard light is a green navigation light that shines across a 112.5-degree arc on the vessel’s right-hand side.

Port Side Light

The port side light is a red navigation light that illuminates a 112.5-degree arc on the vessel’s left-hand side.

Anchor Light

On power-driven vessels under 39.4 feet in length, an all-round white light replaces both the masthead and stern lights by providing 360-degree visibility. When the sidelights are switched off, this same light also serves as the vessel’s anchor light.

Which Boats Require Navigation Lights?

All boats are required to use navigation lights between sunset and sunrise. These lights are a necessity on any vessel and are integral to on-the-water safety. The visibility distance required may differ, depending on the size and type of your boat. All vessels are required to have navigation lights that are visible from a minimum distance of two nautical miles. If the boat is larger the more visibility will be required.
